Chandigarh: PM Modi Attends the Funeral of Parkash Badal, Pays Last Respects

On 25th April 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the funeral of the former Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh. The Prime Minister paid his last respects to the veteran leader, who passed away on 22nd April at the age of 95. The funeral procession began from Badal village in Muktsar district and made its way to the Model Town Extension Cremation Ground in Ludhiana. The procession was led by Parkash Singh Badal's son and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal, and his wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who is also a former Union Minister.

The Prime Minister arrived in Chandigarh in the afternoon and was received by the Governor of Punjab, Banwarilal Purohit, and the Chief Minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi. He then proceeded to pay his last respects to Parkash Singh Badal at his residence in Sector 4, Chandigarh. After paying his respects, Prime Minister Modi spoke to Parkash Singh Badal's family members and expressed his condolences. He also interacted with the leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the party founded by Parkash Singh Badal, and other dignitaries present at the residence.

The Prime Minister then left for the Model Town Extension Cremation Ground in Ludhiana to attend the funeral. He was accompanied by Sukhbir Singh Badal and other leaders of the SAD. The funeral was attended by a large number of people, including politicians, bureaucrats, and members of the public. In his condolence message, Prime Minister Modi described Parkash Singh Badal as a "statesman, a great leader, and a source of inspiration for many". He said that Parkash Singh Badal's contribution to the development of Punjab and the country as a whole will always be remembered.

The Prime Minister also said that Parkash Singh Badal was a champion of farmers' rights and worked tirelessly for their welfare. He said that the farmers of Punjab and the country have lost a great leader and expressed his deep sympathies with the family members of Parkash Singh Badal. Parkash Singh Badal was born on 8th December 1927 in Abul Khurana village in the Ferozepur district of Punjab. He began his political career in 1947 as a member of the Indian National Congress. He later joined the Shiromani Akali Dal in 1970 and became the Chief Minister of Punjab for the first time in 1977.

He went on to serve as the Chief Minister of Punjab five times in total, with his last term ending in 2017. During his tenure, he played a key role in the development of Punjab and worked tirelessly for the welfare of farmers. Parkash Singh Badal was a well-respected politician, known for his simplicity, integrity, and dedication to public service. His death is a great loss to the people of Punjab and the country as a whole. The Prime Minister's presence at his funeral is a testament to the impact that he had on Indian politics and society.
